It started, as most things in motherhood do, with a problem that needed solving.
At the time I had two daughters. Two heads of hair that needed brushing, styling, and (if we were going to make it to church on time looking presentable) accessorizing. And the hair bows available at the store? They were either falling-apart cheap or cartoonishly oversized, designed to make my daughters look like gift-wrapped presents rather than the lovely girls they actually were.
So I did what generations of mothers before me have done: I made my own.
That was back in 2010. What began as a practical solution for my own family turned into requests from friends at church and fellow homeschool mamas at co-op. “Could you make one to match this dress?” “Do you have anything in coral?” “My daughter saw your daughter’s bow and hasn’t stopped asking…”
Before long, online orders were pouring in, and my whole family was gathered around the kitchen table or sitting around the sectional watching old Swiss Family Robinson episodes, cutting ribbon, sorting supplies and orders while I sewed late into the evening. It was chaotic and wonderful and exhausting, and somewhere in the middle of it all, Homespun HoneyBee Designs was born.

What We Believe
This little business has always been about more than hair accessories. (Though we do love a beautiful bow.)
We believe the small things matter. The daily ritual of brushing your daughter’s hair, choosing an accessory together, sending her into the world looking cared-for and put-together. These moments might seem insignificant, but they accumulate into something profound: a childhood marked by attention, intention, and love.
We believe quality honors everyone involved. It honors the maker, who takes pride in creating something excellent. It honors the buyer, who receives lasting value. And it honors the wearer, who learns that she is worth more than disposable, falling-apart things.
We believe girlhood deserves celebration. Not the hyper-sexualized, grow-up-too-fast version the culture pushes. Real girlhood. The kind marked by innocence, wonder, play, and the freedom to simply be young. Our accessories are designed to complement that girlhood, not compete with it.
We believe in handmade with purpose. In a world of mass production and fast fashion, we’ve chosen the slower path. Every piece is crafted by hand, which means every piece carries intention. It takes longer. It costs more. And it matters.
As a Mama blessed with 4 beautiful daughters, it seemed that someone always needed her hair brushed, styled, or just pulled back so I could see her pretty face. Years later, I still have those girls around in various stages of growing up – and they still like it when I fix their hair.
This is my learning journey, a personal commitment to craftsmanship both passed down or self-taught. Each post is my collection of gentle guidance offered as a trustworthy resource as you prepare daughters for life.
When I began, online orders streamed in from Etsy causing the whole family to join in pulling and cutting ribbon while I furiously twisted and sewed a variety of bows to fill all the orders with speed and with care. Worldviews and agendas have made that an unsustainable marketplace for me to be on. Thousands of sales and raving fans later, I am no longer on Etsy now that I have my own website.
This website is where I can once again create and share all I have with you all. A place where you can learn to care for and style your Little Honey’s lovely locks.
Each product is purposefully created to express our brand’s values. Whether it be a lovely quilted book sleeve which demonstrates the belief that a Legacy of Learning needs protection, or a skillfully crafted fabric bow that signals to all that the wearer is cherished and stewarded well.

What We Create
Our collections have grown over the years, but our focus remains the same: beautiful, quality accessories that celebrate the girls who wear them.
Hair Bows and Clips: From everyday grosgrain to special-occasion velvet and silk, our bows are designed to complement your daughter’s beauty without overwhelming it. Classic styles. Quality construction. Sizes that actually make sense for the age wearing them.
Scrunchies and Hair Ties: Gentle on hair, generous in size, and far prettier than anything you’ll find at the drugstore. Our scrunchie scarves have become customer favorites for their versatility and all-day hold.
Headbands: Comfortable enough for all-day wear, beautiful enough for special occasions. Classic styles that work across ages and outfits.
Bun Covers and Specialty Pieces: For those moments when ordinary won’t do. Our embroidered bun covers have found their way into dance recitals, weddings, and Sunday mornings across the country.
The Bespoke Reader Collection: Our newest additions honor the reading life. Quilted book sleeves, personalized bookmarks, Bible covers and library totes for the girls (and their mamas) who believe books deserve beautiful companions.
Beautiful Hair & Face Care Accessories Coming Soon (Spring 2026): Monogrammed hair bands to keep hair back while washing her face, pretty quilted face washing pads, personalized satin hair bonnets and pillow cases that protect her hair while she sleeps.
The Heart Behind the Hands
I’m often asked why we don’t outsource production or find ways to scale up. The honest answer? Because the handmade part isn’t incidental. It’s the point.
When my daughter and I sit together creating these pieces, we’re doing more than manufacturing inventory. We’re continuing a tradition as old as motherhood itself: the passing down of skills, the working side by side, the quiet conversations that happen when hands are busy and hearts are open.
Proverbs 31 describes the virtuous woman as one who “works with willing hands” and “looks well to the ways of her household.” That’s always been the vision here. Not empire-building, but faithful stewardship. Using the skills and resources God has given to create something beautiful, something useful, something that serves families like yours.
Every bow that leaves our workshop carries that intention with it.
Who We Serve
Our customers are mothers like me: women who care about the details, who want quality over quantity, who are intentionally raising daughters in a world that doesn’t always make that easy.
You might be a homeschool mom looking for accessories that coordinate with carefully chosen outfits. A busy mother of many who needs hair solutions that actually stay put. A grandmother searching for meaningful gifts that will be treasured. A mother preparing her daughter for a special role as flower girl or junior bridesmaid.
Whoever you are, if you believe that small things done with excellence add up to a beautiful life, you’ve found your people.
Beyond the Bow
This website has grown into something more than a shop. It’s become a place where I can share everything I’ve learned across twenty-five years of raising daughters and caring for their hair.
You’ll find tutorials and tips for every hair type and texture. Guides for special occasions and everyday challenges. Thoughts on raising traditional daughters in a world that’s forgotten what that means. Practical wisdom wrapped in encouragement, from one mother to another.
Because at the end of the day, we’re all doing the same sacred work: tending to our households, nurturing our daughters, creating homes marked by beauty and intention and love.
I’m so glad you’re here. Welcome to the hive.
With gratitude,
Melissa
